Middleton Center Spring Symposium
Saturday, March 26, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Dr. Robert Wicks

Each spring, the Middleton Center invites a renowned speaker to address issues of spiritual and psychological interest. The Symposium is open to all church members and to the broader community.

Dr. Robert Wicks, who received his Doctorate in Psychology from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, is a professor at Loyola University Maryland. He has taught in universities and professional schools of psychology, medicine, nursing, theology, and social work.  His major area of expertise is the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures encountered in reaching out to others.)   In his clinical practice, Dr. Wicks focuses on working with psychotherapists, physicians, nurses, educators, relief workers, lawyers, corporate executives and persons in full-time ministry.

Dr. Wicks has published over 40 books for both professionals and the general public. Titles include:

  • Everyday Simplicity

  • Living a Gentle, Passionate Life

  • Touching the Holy:  Ordinariness, Self Esteem and Friendship

  • Crossing the Desert:  Learning to Let Go, See Clearly, and Live Simply

  • Prayerfulness: Awakening to the Fullness of Life

One of his latest works is entitled Riding the Dragon.  About it, Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart said, “Like a good friend’s support in tough times, this book is both compassionate and wise.”

His most recent books for professionals, Overcoming Secondary Stress in Medical and Nursing Practice and The Resilient Clinician have both been published by Oxford University Press.

His new book for the general public is: Bounce: Living the Resilient Life.

In 2006, Dr. Wicks received the first annual Alumni Award for Excellence in Professional Psychology from Widener University and is also the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the American Counseling Association’s Division on Ethics and Values.
