Pathways to Pastoral Insight

The Middleton Center for Pastoral Care and Counseling and Lilly Transition into Ministry Program of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church invite you to a six-session series aimed at increasing your insight about your congregation, context and self.  Led by area professionals, each session will focus on an essential aspect of pastoral and congregational life.  Each of these sessions will take place at the Middleton Center, Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church from 9:30 AM to noon and will be in workshop format with lecture, small group exercises, and large group discussion.

September 30, 2010: The Family Dance
Led by Michele Marsh, Ph.D., Council for Relationships

We will explore 2 models of assessing and understanding families:  1/ From the Structural Family Therapy school, we will learn how mapping family hierarchies, roles and inter-relationships sheds light on the ways families function, either increasing or decreasing the life satisfaction of its members.  2/ We will also explore family legacies and themes, giving the participants an opportunity to understand some of the ways in which families transmit their values and expectations through stories and even legends passed down through the generations.

November 18, 2010: The Congregation as a Family System
Led by Rev. Richard R. Wohlschlaeger, Senior Pastor, Swarthmore Presbyterian Church

In his book Generation to Generation Rabbi Edwin H. Friedman compares the emotional processes at work within individual families to those in church and synagogue and suggests that clergy can often do more to help families by the way they lead their congregations than they can through specific counseling sessions.  In this session we will use precepts of this book as a starting point to understand the operative family systems theories as they apply to congregations.  The presenter, Richard R. Wohlschlaeger, has been pastor of the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church for seventeen years and will use his experience in the congregation to illustrate theoretical principles and stimulate discussion among participants.

January 20, 2011: Conflict Resolution in a Congregational Setting
Led by Barbara Foxman, LCSW and Kathryn Mariani, MAR

This workshop will help clergy increase their ability to role model productive communication with congregational members or committees when conflict is present.  Participants will examine their personal responses to conflict, discuss the relationship between stress, anger and conflict, and review and practice productive conflict resolution skills.

March 17, 2011: Boundaries in Pastoral Care Relationship
Led by Rev. Steven Treat, DMin., LMFT, Council for Relationships

This seminar will discuss core dynamics of effective leadership and the need to develop healthy boundaries. Different types of boundaries and the difficulties of implementing them in a faith setting will be the focus of the conversation.

May 26, 2011: Addictions – a Pastoral Response
Led by Fred Baurer, M.D., Medical Director, OATS (Outpatient Addiction Treatment Services)

In this session, we will consider a framework for an empathic approach to addictions and the role of spirituality in the recovery process.  We will discuss the distinctions between chemical use, abuse, and addictions; addiction as a process and its impact on the addict – body, mind, spirit, and in relation to others.  The presenter will also discuss how addictions develop and unfold, and the recovery process as a response to addictive illness.  Recovery will be considered from the 12-step and psychodynamic perspectives.

July 21, 2011: Sustenance for Pastoral Caregivers: What Makes it so Hard?Led by Ruthy Kaiser, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Council for Relationships

We will explore and experience strategies for bringing awareness and loving kindness into relationship with ourselves!  The teachings of the wisdom traditions suggest that we bring compassion to all beings, which is in fact meant to include ourselves as well.  This session will be conversational and experiential with guided mindfulness practices.
